Repetitive Strain Injuries – When work, sport, gardening, and even housework become too much!

How Remedial Massage and Physiotherapy at Thrive Wellness Centre South Perth can help!

We all know someone who loves keeping busy.

The keen gardener who spends the entire weekend pruning, digging and pulling weeds.

The sports enthusiast who simply can’t resist another round of golf, tennis or a good workout.

The office worker spending hours typing, clicking and using a mouse.

And let’s not forget those wonderfully house-proud people who just can’t stop cleaning until every corner of the house is spotless!

Yes, even housework can be a contact sport when your enthusiastic enough!

But sometimes our muscles, tendons and joints have other ideas.

At Thrive Wellness Centre in South Perth, our Remedial Massage and Physiotherapy departments regularly assist people experiencing pain and discomfort associated with repetitive movement and overuse.

What exactly is a Repetitive Strain Injury?

Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) is a broad term used to describe pain and dysfunction associated with repeated movements, sustained postures or ongoing physical loading.

Our muscles and tendons are designed to work, move and adapt. However, when the demands placed on these tissues exceed their capacity to recover, discomfort and irritation can develop.

Sometimes it happens gradually over several weeks. Other times, one particularly enthusiastic weekend in the garden is enough to bring an underlying problem to your attention!

Common conditions we see

Repetitive loading and overuse can contribute to:

  • Tennis elbow – Often associated with gripping, lifting, gardening and racket sports.
  •  Golfer’s elbow – Inner elbow pain associated with repetitive gripping and wrist movements.
  • Shoulder tendon pain – Common with overhead work, repetitive lifting and certain sports.
  • Forearm and wrist discomfort – Often linked with prolonged computer work, tools and repetitive hand movements.
  • Achilles and patellar tendinopathy – Associated with running, jumping and changes in exercise load.
  • Neck and upper back muscle pain: Frequently associated with sustained working postures and repetitive tasks.

Not every ache is a repetitive strain injury, which is why proper assessment is important.

Why Hands On Treatment Can Be Helpful

At Thrive, we believe that understanding the cause of the problem is just as important as treating the painful area.

Our Experienced Remedial Massage Therapists and Physiotherapists use a combination of clinical assessment, hands on techniques and rehabilitation strategies.

Depending on the condition, treatment may include:

Clinical Remedial Massage

Targeted soft tissue techniques to address mmuscular tension, discomfort and restricted movement.

Physiotherapy and Joint Mobilisation

Assessment of movement, joint mechanics, strength and tissue loading, with treatment aimed at improving function.

Dry needling

A targeted technique that may help reduce certain types of muscular pain and tension in appropriately selected patients.

Therapeutic Ultrasound

An adjunctive treatment sometimes used for soft tissue conditions, although evidence of benefit varies depending on the injury.

Shockwave Therapy

Shockwave therapy uses targeted acoustic pressure waves to stimulate a biological response in affected tissues. It may help reduce pain and improve function in certain persistent tendon conditions, including tennis elbow, Achilles tendinopathy and plantar heel pain.

Cupping Therapy

May provide short-term relief of muscular discomfort and tightness for some patients.

Exercise Rehabilitation

Progressive strengthening and appropriate loading are particularly important for tendon recovery and building long-term resilience.

It’s Not Always About Stopping What You Love

One of the biggest misconceptions about repetitive strain injuries is that you simply need to stop everything until the pain disappears.

While reducing aggravating activities temporarily can be helpful, complete rest is not always the best long-term solution.

Tendons and muscles generally need appropriately managed movement and progressive loading to regain their capacity.

Our goal is to help you understand what has contributed to your discomfort, manage symptoms and gradually return to the activities you enjoy.

Whether that’s gardening, golf, gym training, working completely or keeping the house looking immaculate!
