Discover how stress, poor sleep and nervous system overload can affect your memory, concentration and emotional wellbeing.

Have you ever walked into a room and forgotten why you went there?
Do you sometimes struggle to concentrate, feel mentally exhausted, become easily overwhelmed or find yourself reacting emotionally to things that normally wouldn’t bother you?
You’re certainly not alone.
After more than 30 years working as a naturopath, I’ve seen how the demands of modern life can affect the nervous system. It’s concerning to see how these pressures can influence emotional wellbeing and our ability to think clearly.
One area I find particularly interesting is something called cognitive adaptability.
What Is Cognitive Adaptability?
Cognitive adaptability describes our brain’s ability to adjust to changing circumstances, manage information, switch between tasks and respond appropriately to challenges.
Think of it as your brain’s ability to change gears.
When we’re feeling well, we can generally concentrate, remember information, make decisions and manage life’s daily pressures.
Just 20 or 30 years ago, I would more commonly see patients experiencing these concerns later in life, often in their late 60s or 70s. Today, I’m seeing similar issues in children, young adults and people of all ages.
When stress becomes prolonged, sleep is disrupted or we’re mentally overloaded, these abilities can become less efficient.
You may notice:
These symptoms can have many causes, and they shouldn’t automatically be attributed to stress.
The Connection Between Stress and Brain Function
Our nervous system is constantly responding to what’s happening around us.
Short periods of stress are a normal part of life. However, when stress becomes persistent, it can interfere with sleep, attention, working memory and emotional regulation.
Over time, some people feel as though their brain is constantly switched on but never properly refreshed.
This is where I believe a holistic healthcare approach can be particularly valuable.
Rather than looking at memory, concentration, sleep and emotional wellbeing as completely separate issues, I like to explore how they may be connected.
How Can Naturopathic Healthcare Help?
At Thrive Wellness Centre, my approach involves investigating the lifestyle, nutritional and physiological factors that may be contributing to poor mental wellbeing.
Depending on your individual circumstances, we may explore:
Identifying sources of ongoing stress and introducing practical strategies to support relaxation, recovery and emotional regulation.
Assessing dietary patterns and possible nutritional deficiencies that may influence energy, mood and cognitive function.
Addressing lifestyle factors that interfere with restorative sleep, an essential component of memory, learning and emotional wellbeing.
Where appropriate, carefully selected herbal medicines and nutritional supplements may be considered as part of an individualised treatment plan, taking account of medications and medical conditions.
Movement, breathing exercises, relaxation and regular physical activity can all play valuable roles in supporting brain health and stress management.
Your Brain Needs Support, Not Just More Stimulation
Something I often explain to patients is that feeling mentally exhausted doesn’t necessarily mean you need another coffee or something to push you harder.
Sometimes the priority is improving recovery, sleep and the way your body responds to ongoing stress.
The brain is remarkably adaptable, and positive lifestyle changes can support cognitive health throughout life.
Persistent or worsening memory changes should always be medically assessed to exclude underlying causes.
A Personal Message From Bryan
After more than three decades in naturopathic healthcare, one thing I’ve learnt is that physical health and emotional wellbeing are closely connected.
I regularly speak with people who are exhausted, stressed, sleeping poorly or simply don’t feel as mentally sharp as they once did.
My role is to listen, investigate possible contributing factors and help develop a practical, personalised pathway towards better health.
You don’t have to wait until you’re completely overwhelmed before seeking support.
Let’s Talk About Your Health
If you’re experiencing brain fog, poor concentration, stress, mental fatigue or disturbed sleep, I’d welcome the opportunity to discuss your concerns.
