Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) – Part 1

Part 1: Muscle Repair, Inflammation & Cellular Recovery

Healing is not just about time—it’s about oxygen, energy, and cellular communication.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is a powerful supportive therapy that works by increasing the amount of oxygen delivered to tissues under controlled pressure. This creates a biological environment that encourages repair, reduces inflammation, and supports recovery at a cellular level.

HBOT and Muscle Repair

Under hyperbaric conditions, research shows an increase in satellite cells at the site of muscle injury. Satellite cells are specialised stem-like cells responsible for muscle repair and regeneration.

Studies, including work by Oyaizu & Yamamoto (2018), demonstrate that HBOT:

  • Enhances muscle regeneration
  • Increases satellite cell activation at injury sites
  • Accelerates recovery following muscle damage

This is particularly relevant for:

  • Sports injuries
  • Post-surgical muscle trauma
  • Chronic musculoskeletal pain and weakness

From Inflammation to Healing—Faster

One of HBOT’s most important actions is its ability to accelerate the transition from an inflammatory state to an anti-inflammatory, healing state.

Rather than suppressing inflammation entirely (which the body still needs), HBOT:

  • Shortens prolonged inflammation
  • Supports resolution and tissue repair
  • Reduces secondary tissue damage

This shift allows the body to move into recovery more efficiently, leading to faster and more complete healing.
