Fatigue, burn -out and low energy are feelings of tiredness that persist even after sleep; these symptoms are often caused by a variety of factors including nutritional deficiencies, chronic (long term) stress, poor sleep and unhealthy lifestyle choices. It’s not that you choose to put yourself there on purpose, the demands of our modern lifestyle often lead us there without us even noticing.
Common signs and symptoms of Fatigue and Burn-Out
They can be classified under three categories: Behavioural, Physical and Emotional
Avoidance form responsibilities
Use of food, drugs or alcohol to cope
Taking out your frustrations on others
Feeling tired and drained
Frequent headaches or muscle pain
Change in appetite or sleep habits
Sense of failure
Feeling alone in the world
Loss of motivation
If any of these relate to you, here are some of the things you can do to better manage your wellbeing and feel better.
Improve your diet – Eat more natural food and less processed packaged food.
Drink more clean, filtered water as dehydration can contribute to feelings of fatigue and burn-out.
Eat small meals regularly.
Get good quality sleep – ensure a comfortable sleep environment – comfortable temperature, reducing light and sound in the room and having a comfortable pillow and mattress, does make a difference.
Try not to have meals closer to bed time.
Avoid stimulants before bed like caffeine, alcohol or nicotine.
Increase physical activity.
Reduce stress levels by mediating and practicing yoga.
Any stress you experience whether it be physical, mental or emotional results in the same physiological response, the secretion of stress hormones into the blood stream. These hormones allow the body to function above its normal capabilities. Once the cause of the stress is removed or reduced the body expends energy, thus returning the system back to a normal level, adapting to the stress.
However if the stress is chronic (long term) then a state of fatigue , ‘Burn-Out’ results.
